Marketing, so often the first choice career for graduates, as this is such a fast paced and dynamic area, often at the forefront of a company representation and often considered to be the most influential. Very few business functions have such a diverse variety of areas such as Brand Management, Category Management, Account Management (Agency side), Communications Managers, POS Managers and Marketing Analysts. Each area is completely different and covers a wide range of disciplines which can provide a stimulating life long career.
Development within a marketing function is rarely limited and clear career paths are often evident, for example if you begin your career as an Assistant Brand Manager it is common sense that the roles following will be that of a Brand Manager, Senior Brand Manager and eventually a role such as a Group Brand Manager.
A typical career path in Marketing
Marketing Assistant - £15,000 to £22,000 This would include roles with titles such as Marketing Assistant, Marketing Executive, Assistant Category Manager and Junior Brand Manager. Such roles will provide you with a valuable insight into the field of marketing. Duties and responsibilities can include assisting your manager with range reviews, category stategy, promotions including direct marketing and above and below the line advertising.
Assistant Marketing Manager - £18,000 to £26,000 Also including titles such as Assistant Brand Manager and Assistant Category Manager. This is usually a more specific marketing role generally holding responsibility for a specific category or area with the supervision of a manager. On occasion this can include having subordinates. However, it is rare that these would include direct reports until moving onto a more senior level.
Marketing Manager - £28,000 to £50,000 This position would generally include the management of a particular overall area of the business; in almost all cases this role will involve the supervision of subordinates within their daily tasks, including their individual personal development. The Marketing Manager will usually have a large part to play in the strategic direction of the marketing plans and will often involve budgetary management.
Marketing Controller / Director - £50,000 to £120,000 A much more strategic role within the business, responsible for all areas of marketing, generally with over 10 years experience. With this role it is essential to be commercially aware of all related markets and have the ability to foresee potential future market developments and react quickly to the demands of a fast paced business discipline. Having gained several years experience in developing individuals, to be successful in this role, it is paramount to lead a tight ship and encourage all team members to keep their fingers on the pulse.
